Classroom Music Videos that Highlight Black Artists

What started out as me putting together a "quick" video playlist for my classroom has turned into a favorite project to share with you, too! You'll want to know about this...

February is Black History Month and, now, more than ever, I want my kiddos to see the many ways Black talent, inspiration, and leadership have influenced our American history. I consciously aim to represent diversity throughout my teaching, EVERYday, but February gives me a push to do more in new ways. I, like many teachers, bring in diversity through books, images and materials, but I pushed myself to think of more ways... hey! How about the music we play everyday! So I put together a video playlist of all sorts of music, collaborations, and dance featuring Black artists to use for our classroom dance party brain breaks, or just for listening to. I wanted a wide array of Black talent– here's a sample of who's on the list!

I found over 15 videos so far that I think kids will enjoy watching and moving to. I'll update this list as I find new ones. Although Black History Month motivated me to put the list together, I plan on stopping back here myself for dance parties for years to come... I told you this project started out just for me. grin.

Please note these videos were not specifically "made for children" like many video playlists shared on teacher blogs. I reviewed my selections for acceptable language, and with a teacher's eye, hoping the visuals added value for kids. I chose "clean" videos, finding a couple that even included kids, and if I couldn't find an acceptable version, it didn't make the list. Please watch them yourself before choosing the ones to use with your students. I added the length of each video to help you pick a couple on any given day. You might want to give a little background at times and maximize the learning as some of these videos are pretty old– black and white technology was as modern as it got for many years. I want the kiddos to see and hear the wide variety of music and dance that make up our American history and culture, as no matter how old, the music is still great in our ears today. My kiddos were as fascinated by the bit of scat singing and "flash dance" tap dancing in the Cab Calloway video with the Nicholas brothers as they were drawn in to trying the hiphop moves in Watch Me.

Hope this gives you some good choices for this month and WAY beyond. As for me? You know I'm teaching my kiddos the hustle! This summer I went to a high school reunion and still proved myself the Hustle Queen. snort. You'll find lots of variety in the list– jazz, soul, hiphop, R&B, rock n' roll, worldbeat, disco.... Here we go!

And I end on perhaps an unlikely note. This is the "Trading Taps" segment of Riverdance... you know I like to put a wee bit of Irish in there when I can. wink. We saw Riverdance in Dublin last summer and this number was fun and powerful. I'll use it (and the Hiplet Ballerinas up above) to discuss how many different cultures from all over the world influence music and dance worldwide. It will be fun to contrast the heel kicks and straight arms of the Irish dancers with the looser, more fluid movement of the hip American tap dancers. There is notable difference in music styles in this friendly competition, as well.

Hope you enjoy this compilation of videos highlighting musical contributions of Black performers over the decades. Let me know in comments if you think I found good variety or if I've missed some great video that would be particularly good for the kiddos. And I hope you and your students can get down and boogie around the room. Whoot Whoot!

And as always, please PIN the post! See you around!

The Winner, Tips, and Funnies!

It's Friiiiiiiday..... Friday, Friday, Friday! Today is Friday day.  Friday day!

Do any of you remember that song? I think it came from a musical. Anyway, it is indeed Friday and I have four and a half more school days to go... well, after today... SO I'm joining in the fun of Doodle Bugs Teaching's Five for Friday Linky party to share what's going on! Thanks Kacey!! Oh, and yes, this is a Funny Kid Friday week, too.

Coming up below... hee hee.
1.  First things first... drum roll, please.... our winner of the HUE Animation Studio is Carol Davis!  Carol is a STEM teacher for third thru fifth graders and she writes about winning:

"I am so excited about this! I thought about many things that I could do with the Hue! I think having kids use it as a follow up to a design challenge, maybe even to show their devices work, will just be amazing! The creativity kids will use, not too mention the intense collaboration it will take to complete, is just going to be so fun to be part of. I teach third to fifth graders in a magnet school and I can see my kids of all ability levels really benefiting from making the videos as part of our STEM class."

Pretty neat! I look forward to hearing what Carol is up to next year with the HUE... and we will hear because Carol blogs at Teachers Are Terrific!
Way to go, Carol!

If you some how missed the hype about the HUE Animation Studio that went with this giveaway, you'll want to swing back to these posts and check out our animated videos!

2.  Do you remember cootie catchers from when you were a kid? I do. Also called fortune tellers, I had my future husband predicted many, many times... wrongly, of course, as Jonathan's name never showed up! With school getting out for us next week Friday I went looking for FUN skill practice activities and I found these free math themed cootie catchers at 123 Homeschool 4 Me.  They are designed for practice with addition, subtraction, and number recognition. Every kid in our school seems to be into cootie catchers right now, so I shared the link with my colleagues– with a little teacher inventiveness, these can be differentiated for practice with higher math skills. You can find this little Freebie by clicking on the image below.

You can also google to find lots of other cootie catchers for practicing a variety of skills. And if you're like me and it's been some time since you made a cootie catcher, not to worry because the downloads come with directions... or you can ask a third grader!

3.  I made this card for our music teacher who injured herself at school. I asked the kids to tell me any "remedies" they knew. We had to discuss that a "remedy" is something that helps a person feel better, as it was a new word to many. Good old common core vocabulary building...

Here are shots of our final product. Super BooBoo Buddy started out as a bandaid. You can really see all the knowledge kids have of sickness and injury– from medicine called "namonia," to tubes, to distracting your brain. I think my favorite was "Stay calm– no wildness." Good advice for whatever ails you. It brought a smile to my colleague's face for sure.

4.  Have you seen this KooKoo Kangaroo video yet? I am using it in our last week of school as my parting message to my kiddos. It is a totally silly– in the KooKoo Kangaroo sort of way– and totally upbeat, but it's making me teary :(

5.  Okay, so the kids are on a roll this week giving me Funny Kid Stories. They're making sure I have a supply to last me over the summer, I guess.

My kids were lined up to come in from recess and they didn't know I was standing just inside the door about to pick them up. I heard, "Well, Mrs. Wright isn't here so I can say it all I want– D-O-M, D-O-M, D-O-M, D-O-M..."

Anyone fluent in kindergartenese knows that D-O-M is the kindergarten spelling of the "D word–" DUMB. "Dumb" is really only a "bad word" when it is labeling a person as such, but kinders think it is bad all the time, and most teachers let that stand.

I wiped the grin off my face before the one flaunting naughtiness could see, then stepped out and said, "Why is someone spelling Dom, Dom, Dom? We don't have a Dom in our class." They all just looked at me. "I sure hope nobody was trying to spell dumb, dumb, dumb!" I gave "the teacher look" to the guilty-looking guilty party and we continued on our way.

Hope nobody ever says you are D-O-M!!

ONE MORE WEEK FOR ME!!  Hope to see you again soon. Scoot on back to Kacey's Five for Friday and get this week's scoop!

Pin 3 and MORE

Hi again. I tell you when it comes to me and blogging it's either hot or cold, feast or famine, flood or draught. At the moment it's a hot feast flood– I think this is my third post in a row with more coming in the not too distant future. Today I have several things to share that are MOSTLY about my top favorite Pins for May. However, there are a couple other things ya gotta know about.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to Zayda from Magically in First for winning my giveaway of Secrets of the Vegetable Garden. She loves teaching science and is going to use this neat shine-through book to introduce her plants unit. Her firsties are gonna love it. Way to go Zayda. Read about the book here.

Second, I am participating in another big ol' giveaway with some fellow bloggers. You can win one of two fifty dollar TPT gift certificates. Wouldn't you have a great little shopping spree with that!

And NOW check out these three pins!

Okay, so I couldn't make up my mind which KooKoo I liked the most, so I'm posting three of Koo Koo Kangaroo's movement videos as my first pin. These are our newest discovered vids– they have many– and our current favorites. Do you know KooKoo? If you don't, you should.

I mean come on... grown men who sing about their fanny packs! Hilarious. The kids like them, too. Their facial expressions are great and the music is very well done with a variety of styles. These goofballs really know kids.

I don't do Go Noodle, but I do collect movement videos on my Brain Break Pinterest Board. When we need to move, I just open this board and we choose the dance of the day. Love. We don't use this collection as much as we did in the mean winter months, but sometimes you only have five minutes to move and my Pinterest board is super handy for this. Click to see these guys and more faves. You might consider following just so you can get the variety of choices immediately.

My next Pin comes from Two Writing Teachers. I guess my mind is drifting toward next year. THIS year I had a good handful of kiddos for whom writing was very difficult. Both the physical aspect of putting pen to paper, and the recording of stories. I am doing early research for next year, looking for ways to scaffold better for my challenged kids. I LOVE teaching writing and I strive to be the best I can be. Check out this article, and while there, you'll see other posts in similar veins pop up. All kindergarten teachers have low kids and these ideas are valuable in helping us reach all our kiddos.

Consider following Two Writing Teachers, too. This group of blogger authors, considerably more than two now, share cutting edge thoughts on the teaching of writing, and they are pretty good writers themselves. I always find the posts worth my while.

Hmmm.... and three should be....

I've been using this super simple idea for my lowest reading group. Before they come over I write the sight words we're working on on slates with Expo marker. I hand them the slate and a Q-tip to "Trace-Erase" the words as a warm up. The novelty makes it fun to practice writing their words. Just one more teaching strategy in my ever growing collection. Next year I'll do some letter writing practice with Q-tips, too, as it's needed.

And because I JUST found this and want to do it THIS week for Mother's Day, I share it here.

I think this is the cutest dang Mother's Day card I've ever seen. Tips to make the photo come out right are included on Bren's blog.

Can you believe I have today off! It is voting day and our schools are polling places. So in an effort to stay away from potential gun toting voters, our district decided a month ago to close and label today as a "snow day." I am THRILLED with the day off, even as I am not thrilled with the reason.

My To-Do List:
Get tire fixed
Work on animation project I'm doing with the kiddos
Get ready for an all day field trip on Wednesday
Write lesson plans for three days I'm out next week
Meet some new students I'll have next year
Help my daughter who's home on semester break with a painting project
Have my mom up for dinner
And...
And...

Okay, so I have a week's worth to work into one day... I can do it... I'm a superhero-teacher-type...

Thanks so much for stopping by. Go check out some more Pin love by clicking below on the blog buttons. Heaps of thanks to Lisa and Marissa for their monthly Pick 3 Pin Linky. I love to party... linky party, that is!
